Déployés dans l’obscurité et dissimulés par un épais brouillard, de grands polygones noirs flottent dans l’espace, rendus visibles par des faisceaux lumineux. Un point de vue matérialisé sur le sol permet de « reconstruire » visuellement la forme d’un rectangle. Le dispositif scénographique trouble la perception du spectateur, qui perçoit tantôt une forme pleine, tantôt une forme éclatée, selon le principe de l’anamorphose.
Olivier Ratsi met en œuvre des dispositifs de déconstruction des repères (le temps, l’espace et la matière) en s’appuyant sur cette technique de l’anamorphose. Ses créations multiplient les points de vue, physiques, culturels et psychologiques. Ainsi, le spectateur n’est nullement privé de sa capacité subjective de reconstruction/reconstitution de la réalité et est invité à prendre position afin de vivre l’œuvre en fonction de son propre ressenti.

« Olivier Ratsi a commencé à s’intéresser à l’image dans le sillage des musiques électroniques à la fin des années 90. (…) Dans ce contexte où le son, la lumière et l’espace se télescopent, il poursuit une réflexion autour de la notion de déconstruction spatio-temporelle. (…) En 2006-2007, Olivier Ratsi fonde le label visuel Antivj avec Yannick Jacquet, Romain Tardy et Joanie Lemercier. Ensemble, ils remettent en question le VJing et proposent de véritables performances audiovisuelles, des installations, des mises en espace (mapping) grâce à des projections sur des bâtiments et des dispositifs scéniques, en sculptant la lumière selon des « principes géométriques »… » Laurent Diouf, Digitalarti
Son travail a été présenté dans des galeries, musées et centres d’art aux États-Unis, en Corée, à Taiwan, Glasgow, Lyon, Tokyo et Paris ainsi que dans des festivals internationaux tels qu’Elektra et Mutek au Canada, Croisement en Chine, Digital Choc à Tokyo, TAG au Mexique, Multiplicidade et Eletronika au Brésil, Mapping en Suisse, Biennale Némo à Paris…
Spread out in the dark, hidden by a thick fog and light effects, big black polygons float in space. A point of view materialized on the ground enables to visually reconstruct the shape of a rectangle. The scenographic device of Shape disturbs the spectator’s perception, who sometimes perceives a solid form, sometimes an exploded form, according to the principle of anamorphosis.

French visual artist. Lives and works in Paris. Olivier Ratsi’s work presents objective reality, time, space and matter as a series of intangible informative notions. Focusing on the experience of reality and its representations, as well as the perception of space, he conceives works that encourage the viewer to question his or her own interpretation of what is real. As part of his work process, Olivier Ratsi creates systems that deconstruct our spatio-temporal reference points, often using the technique of anamorphosis, developed during his research. Making a break with objective reality, Olivier Ratsi’s works are not specifically aimed to unleash emotions or to perturb the senses, but rather to work as a catalyst for different points of view and cultural and psychological references. As such, the viewer is not deprived of his own subjective capacity to reconstruct/reconstitute reality. Instead, he is invited to make up his own mind and to experience the works through his own personal reactions.
His work has been shown across the world in many new media art festivals, foundations, group and solo exhibitions : Mutek and Elektra in Montreal, Némo in Paris, Digital Choc in Tokyo, D-Museum in Seoul, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan, Denise René Gallery and Charlot Gallery in Paris, Wood Street Galleries in Pittsburgh…He also did a commissioned work for the New York Times Style Magazine in 2008.
