Vibrant Matter est une installation sonore et cinétique dans laquelle une membrane de papier se déforme lentement sous l’action d’aimants mobiles amplifiés.
Vibrant Matter a été inspirée par un voyage de l’artiste en Islande. Extrêmement contrastés, les paysages qu’elle y a découverts semblaient figés dans le temps, comme s’ils s’étaient solidifiés en pleine métamorphose. Sous sa surface en apparence immobile, la matière est pourtant soumise à des tensions permanentes, à d’incessantes transformations, à des impulsions mesurables qu’il nous est possible d’enregistrer. Métaphore délicate de ces tremblements titanesques et continuels, cette installation cinétique et sonore donne corps à une activité sismique miniature, accélérée et amplifiée. L’œuvre évoque ainsi les frémissements intangibles que dissimule la croûte terrestre, pour nous faire voir et entendre son imperceptible mouvement.
En dialogue avec Vibrant Matter, l’Artothèque propose une sélection d’œuvres de sa collection.
Cette exposition est proposée avec Le Bon Accueil à Rennes et Apo33 à Nantes.
Els Viaene a commencé sa carrière en tant qu’artiste sonore et preneuse de son en 2001. Grâce à un dispositif de deux petits micros, elle prend le pouls des paysages ambiants, notamment de ses rythmes naturels et de ses textures sonores. Par le biais de ses performances, compositions ou installations sonores, elle fait voyager le spectateur dans des univers imaginaires ou organiques. Ses installations composées de matières sonores dans un environnement physique créent de nouvelles dimensions en jouant sur les frontières physiques de l’espace ainsi que sur les perceptions sonores et visuelles et leurs interférences.
Elle a notamment exposé à Oscillations Festival (Bruxelles), Le Bon Accueil (Rennes), Alte Schmiede and Kunstradio (Vienne), MoisMulti (Québec), Kikk festival (Namur), Plunc festival (Lisbonne), Laznia (Gdansk), File Festival (Sao Paulo), Gaîté Lyrique (Paris).

Vibrant Matter is an audio based kinetic sculpture, in which a paper membrane is slowly manipulated by magnets and its sound amplified through the use of embedded metals.
A trip to Iceland forms the origin of this project and research into the relation between, sound, matter and landscape. The extremely contrasting environments all had one thing in common: it seemed like all these places had been frozen in time, as if coagulated in the middle of a metamorphosis. Looking into processes hidden below the surface, Vibrant Matter explores the relationship between the unfolding landscape and its observer like a time lapse. While the visible environment appears static to the eye; below the surface are continuous and ongoing processes, tensions and movements that can be measured, recorded and articulated through sound.
Els Viaene (born in 1979) started her work as a sound artist / field recordist in 2001. With a set-up of two small microphones she listens, zooms into and enlarges the aural landscapes surrounding us. The natural rhythms and textures of the sounds hidden in those landscapes form the basis of her work.
Working on these sound materials for performances, sound compositions or installations she makes the listeners travel in imaginary and organic environments. Through the specific use and set-up of sound within a space her installations create new spaces within existing ones, either emphasizing or making disappear the physical borders of that space.
In doing so she often plays with the notions of seeing and hearing, the perception of what we see and hear and how both interfere.
