Création originale« Prélevant des morceaux de paysages, Paul Duncombe tente leur maintien en vie au sein d’installations aussi sophistiquées que fragiles, porteuses de la possible finitude des créatures qu’elles abritent. Défricheur de friches urbaines, il en rapporte sur le lieu de monstration des débris dont il entretient les mousses, insectes et plantes grâce à des dispositifs pourvoyeurs d’eau et de lumière. Dans cette exploration, Paul Duncombe s’emploie aussi à transcrire la croissance d’organismes vivants au travers de sculptures, dessins et partitions musicales. La pousse d’une petite plante sauvage est alors reconstituée numériquement, exprimée en volume figé comme un graphique détaché de l’objet de son analyse. La transcription musicale de ces mouvements, applicable à une flore vaste comme un paysage, laisse alors entrevoir la possible écriture d’une symphonie d’un monde bruissant comme une jungle, orageux, venteux comme un désert en formation. » Audrey Teichmann, 2018.
À partir d’une réflexion portée sur les interactions entre être humain et nature, Paul Duncombe explore les différentes échelles du paysage . Ses recherches visent les mécanismes qui lient entre eux les éléments infiniment petits, les horizons lointains et les corps qui les habitent. Il a exposé dans les galeries Thaddaeus Ropac, Rhinocéros & Cie et Smaaks à Paris, à la Villa Mallet-Stevens, au Kyoto Art Center, à la Gaîté Lyrique, au Palais de Tokyo et à La Vallée à Bruxelles.
As he extracts pieces of landscapes, Paul Duncombe attempts to preserve them within his sophisticated and fragile installations, bearers of possible endings of the tiny creatures existing on the removed fragment. Pioneer of urban wasteland, he comes bringing debris to his determined work space, having gathered moss, insects and plants for his systems which provide water and light. From this exploration, Paul Duncombe tries to transcribe the growth of living matter through sculptures, drawings and musical scores. The young shoot of a small wild plant is digitally reconstituted by this encapsulated execution in volume as a graphic sketch detached from its subject of contemplation. The musical transcription of those movements can be applied to a flora specimen as vast as a landscape expands the imagination towards a symphony of a noisy world as a jungle, stormy, windy as a desert in formation.
Based on a unique reflection devoted to the interactions between human beings and nature, Paul Duncombe explores different notions of scale we find in the landscape: from a grain of dust to the desert, from a drop of water to the tsunami, from a seed to the forest, the targets of his research are the mechanisms which connect the smallest elements and the remote horizon as well as the material forms they take. He has shown his works in galleries Thaddaeus Ropac, Rhinocéros & Cie and Smaaks in Paris, at the Villa Mallet-Stevens, at the Kyoto Art Center, Gaîté Lyrique, Palais de Tokyo and La Vallée in Bruxelles.
