Macular

Focus international • Carte blanche à Collectif MACULAR/Festival Conflux (Rotterdam)

20 décembre

20h

Within this audiovisual live performance, Joris Strijbos and Eelco Ottenhof present the first experiments from their long-term investigation into expanded cinema and the materiality of light. In this work, light is treated not as a carrier of images but as a sculptural substance: projection becomes volume, and sound becomes a spatial force that shapes the audience’s perception. Using three aligned video projectors and a dense atmospheric field of smoke, the work presents volumetric light patterns in which visitors find themselves looking directly into the illuminated space of the projector itself. By using the projector in this way, the duo transforms projection into a spatial phenomenon. The light beams become visible volumes, shaping temporary forms in the air while interacting with a multichannel electronic sound composition. Minimal patterns unfold into shifting, emergent structures in which rhythm and brightness become tightly interwoven. As a result, the audience is immersed in abstract patterns of light, sound, and movement, experiencing a space where perception shifts and the senses start to merge.

A multi-faceted entity, Macular brings together artists with a shared artistic vision. Like a nomadic laboratory, the members of the group collaborate on the creation and production of multisensory, minimalist works that play with our perceptions. With Rotterdam as the cornerstone of the collective’s experiments in science and technology, their projects are live performance instruments in their own right, with the artist and the audience integrated into the system. They incorporate movement, light, and sonic elements into their pieces and seek to create their own abstract language.

Each year, the collective propels the Conflux festival with a bold, cross-disciplinary program of contemporary works, experimental music, and unique encounters.

Also based in Rotterdam, the Klankvorm platform run by the collective is dedicated to the creation and production of experimental audiovisual creations—works, performances, presentations.
