Created in Normandie 10 years ago, ]interstice[ meeting of the unclassified continues to celebrate sound and visual art. In ssociating those artistic forms open to multiple lectures, the festival initiates reflection on contemporary creation and technology and invests itself in those spaces within the city which, to quote Pierre Sansot in Poétique de la Ville “ composes and recomposes itself, at each instant, by the steps of its inhabitants”. A church that is reborn at the ringing of its bell, a hypnotic cascade, a choir of sewing machines, with threads that cut through the space, a wooden MÉCANO resounding its playing with its own sonic material, explosions of particles, earthquakes, lightning bolts, the interstellar vibration beneath our feet, the infinity of water, a sonic discovery of the city...

The festival is not only an ensemble of works, performances or shows, but also a workshop, and a meeting for the artists. Their devotion and their attention are added encouragement in this regard. At this moment, this tenth anniversary, we invite those artists that have marked and supported our efforts such as Nicolas Tourte (2008), Cécile Beau et Nicolas Montgermont (2009, 2012), Arno Fabre (2011, 2013) et Herman Kolgen (2012). The public is also called to make the acquaintance of korean artist HeeWon Lee, Martin Messier from Canada, Aernoudt Jacobs of the belgian collective Overtoon, Julien Poidevin, Franck Vigroux, Nicolas Talbot...

In partnership with Relais d'sciences and le Pavillon, ]interstice[ proposes new encounters aiming to identify new interests, new forms of collaboration and contact with the public : living lab workshops, conferences/seminars and commented parcours for 'unguided' visits.

This tenth edition is the occasion to sincerely give thanks for all of our supporters, without whom the festival would not exist. The territorial collectivities and the state, who maintained or reinforced their engagement in the project, all of the institutional partners, associative and private and all of their teams contribute to the brilliance of an event consecrated to creation and its free access and visibility. The festival is known for its respect of the artists, the work and the public.

There would not be a festival without the volunteering of the production team and the the students and alumni of the école supérieure d’arts et médias of Caen/Cherbourg, contributing to the professional realization of all of the exhibitions, the welcoming of the artists and the public. Each edition is a fragile construction that walks the tightrope of constraints and all this permits ]interstice[ to exist.

LUPANAR

Before the ripples were made through which the water flowed and embraced the space, I first imagined dust particles carried on the turbulence of hot air upwards at the heights of volume. More humid towards the ceiling, they stagnate a moment without touching and then find their descending flow and maintain their levitational state before retaking their ascension. The work of Nicolas Tourte questions with a sense of humor and derision, the place of man in the universe. He principally treats ideas of cycles of repetition and the notion of virtuality. All begins with a widespread dilettante analysis of the fields in which he circulates. During his travels, through the ordinary, he collects anecdotes, images both captured and animated. He sets the stage with those invisible cycles and mechanisms that direct our lives.

One chapter of his repertoire presents itself through impulsive notes, undeniable ready-mades, ideas that hurry towards immortality just to pass on to others. More still rests, in wait, in that which to be a life-source, a stronghold of nourishment and visual resources that carries dividends of the infinitely small of a fortuitous meeting.

INDUCTION SERIE #4.1

The work of Aernoudt Jacobs phenomenological and empirical. It originates in the research of accoustics and technology that studies how sounds can be catalysts processes, affecting our field of perception. His installations all concentrate on one point : how to translate the complexity and the stratification of our immediate environment as a form that can genuinely be experimented?

Induction Series examines and reinterprets the laws of electromagnetic induction of sounds. The installation takes the form of a floating structure composed of white steel boxes maintained by powerful magnets that produce a continuous magnetic field. All of this combined with bobins that generate electromagnetic charges. The light vibrations which are obtained are acoustically amplified by natural resonance and transforms jam jars into speakers.

In this way, the work accentuates the transition between that which can be seen and heard In addition to his artistic practice, Aernoudt Jacobs codirects the collective Overtoon with Christoph De Boeck, an assistance platform for the production of sound art based in Brussels. He teaches at the Atelier Audio of the RITS, Erasmushoge school Brussels.

CONTINUUM#2

A continuum defines continuity in space or time. From this vision of the world as an ensemble of elements that we can apprehend in a continuous way, Cécile Beau and Nicolas Montgermont propose an ensemble of works that play with a perception of the universe based on the waves that run through it. From the perception of seismic activity to listening to the furthest stars, from the sound of the earth to the rhythm of the stars, the exhibition renders perceptible that which is beyond the human scale. A promenade between the telluric wave and the anstronomical wave, infra-bass and ultrasound, between the intra and the extra terrestrial.

Continuum#2 covers a territory that explores the limits of sensitive perception in order to construct a work that exploits the limits of esthetic representation. In showing the invisible, the artists situate themselves at the frontier of both the spectrum of the senses and that of the artistic. Arnaud Stines.

Since 2012, Cécile Beau and Nicolas Montgermont collaborate in the creation of installations which deal with the physical properties of our environment. Cécile Beau proposes sensory experiences that plunge us in rather realistic universes that behave with a fictional supplement that instills them with all of their poetry. Vegetables and minerals set the stage in works with a troubling beauty. The artist ARPENTS the real to take little pieces in order to create hybrid and enigmatic works that generate fantom-like atmospheres.

The path of Nicolas Montgermont crosses the sciences and acoustic musical research. Today the artist develops his creations amidst several collectives. Since 2005, in the duo chdh, he works synesthetic aspects of audiovisual performance in creating the choreography of abstract particles. He equally works in the duo Art of Failure, which explores the capacity that different mediums have to generate their own form. Thus, the Corpus series proposes to highlight differentiating architectures in Europe, of which the church Vieux St-Sauveur at the occasion of the 9th edition of ]interstice[.

INFINITY II

Born in 1978 at Kyung Ki-Do in Soth Korea, HeeWon Lee lives and works in Paris. Jean-Christophe Bailly, in his collection of written works Paysage Variations (2014) writes in his text Écriture de la Lumière, “ The image that we see in this film does not correspond with something that one can really experience, such slowness that does not exist for our perception. What is extraordinary, is that, within this image that is artificial. We have before us the augmented vertigo of what we constantly have our eyes on, that is to say that (...) the film, does and continues to do the work that was always done by images : produce in front of the real, faced with it, next to it, an insistence. Since, the majority of the time, or practically, all of the time, we do not insist, all we do is pass.” He could have written this text for HeeWon Lee, in as much as he resembles the sensation one feels facing a sublime waterfall, that flows in the church of Vieux-Saint-Sauveur.

A bell a VOLÉE TOURNANTE, carried by the wooden belfry is actioned by a motor. It pivots slowly on its axis. Very slowly. The movement is barely perceptible. There it is upside down, at the balancing point. Silent wait. Suspended time. Suddenly the bell swings, pulled by all of its weight, it falls, swings freely and rings powerfully. The sound resonates, projected by the swinging of the bell. Little by little, the movement slows, the amplitude is reduced. The bell returns to silence, to rest, to immobility. The motor continues to turn. Once more the cycle prepares to begin anew. The bell is a musical and material production. It is a sound and a movement, a vibration and a suspension, a story and also permanence. It is a piece among those that erase the frontiers that exist between disciplines by ignoring them. It is a piece among those that are attached to poetry, free of all will for the contemporary or for a modern fascination. It is a work that thinks of history in a different way, than in just rendering its form into a museum object.

The church Saint-Nicolas was founded in the eleventh century and is classed as a historic monument since 1913. In 1791, the church was no longer held its religious function and the four bells of the church were taken down... In 2015, the church will ring once more.

Martin Messier is a composer, a performer and a video artist. If the sound is the motor of all his creations, Messier opens himself up easily to the meeting of electroacoustic music and meetings with other art forms, thus only with artistic collaborations. His works animate themselves through the relationship between sound and matter (objects or living bodies). The artist redefines to no end the frontiers of concrete music in creating sound with objects : alarm clocks, pencils, invented machines and sewing machines... At the beginning of this dialogue between sound and object, there is always this idea to push a bit further than usual the everyday imagination and magnify these objects in giving them a voice and a new use. Messier also conceives collaborative works that marries dance and music, aiming to allow sound to live on not only through objects, but also through bodies in movement. In an inverse hierarchy, the music, rather than being in the service of a choreography, becomes the motor. The works of Martin Messier were seen in several national festivals and events (Mutek, FTA and Mois Multi) and international (Transmediale in Berlin, Sonar in Barcelona, Nemo in Paris, Scopitone in Nantes and Today's Art in La Haye). La Chambre des Machines notably received recognition at the prestigious Prix Ars Electronica (Austria) in 2011. In 2010, Messier founded 14 sites, a production company for sound works for stage, a true platform for this new type of sonic creation.

SEWING MACHINE ORCHESTRA

The installation Sewing Machine Orchestra invites the spectator to closely observe the choreography of twelve sewing machines, orchestrated by a computer with the help of micro-contacts. Like a tentacled monster, the machines are powerfully deployed in a continuous movement, and invade the space with their heavy sounds. After having woken them gently, in his performative version, Martin Messier sets them free in this installation, their unchaining, creating a universe that is just as ghost-like as it is terrifying.

Julien Poidevin hails from the École Supérieure d’Arts Plastiques et Visuels of Mons. Intermedia artist, he works on systems that interrogate the relationship of our body with territory through employing different modes of expression. These creations explore and question our rapport with space and with perception.

CITY SCORE

City Score approaches the question of the relationship between the body and territory, and initiates a poetic dialogue between “interior” and “exterior”. It is a research project based around the sonic landscape and its representational possibilities. After a first phase of research in Mons (Belgium), City Score takes form through a mixed media installation presented in Caen that crosses drawing , projection and generated sonic creation. A graphic score is translated from footage of the city which generates and transforms artificial sounds. These sounds mix with the noises of the city captured live at the exterior of the Pavillon. This composition, open to the flow of urban sounds – and potentially without beginning or end – creates an interlacing of times invisible to the eye but which make audible and render sensitive the diversity of the sites and their singularity. The research of Julien Poidevin makes evident this fluidity of sound and the perpetual transformation of its intensity in keeping with the spatial conditions at play. He thus discovers the passages of the city, the currents and paths indiscernible with the naked eye but that the sound transports and inhabits musically. He reveals a little known part of our urban environment. In this, Julien Poidevin situates himself in the most contemporary line of research that makes art and the work of art not a fixed result, but a process of discovery : an ingeniousness that finds a way to render the sensitive that more generally remains opaque and unperceived by us.

LIGNES SONORES

Lignes Sonores (sonic lines) is a system of architectural intervention. Each time it is put into place, in situ, it plays and transforms our relationship with space. The luminous audio-reactive installation is constituted of 16 Lwires (luminous wires) that are deployed in the space of the Pavillon. The work is dedicated to the architecture and to urbanism and invites the rediscovery through a more poetic angle. Lignes Sonores presents itself as a synesthetic research that is multi-sensory, experimenting new immersive forms.

GEOSONIC MIX

The project Géosonic Mix proposes an immersion in a sonic landscape under construction. An invisible architecture made of invisible listening zones is superimposed over the topology of the site. The sounds are unleashed and modulate throughout a sound path, based on the localization of the walker who is equipped with a smartphone and a headset that enables him to generate his own urban mix. Julien Poidevin in residence in Caen, follows the circuit of ]interstice[, throughout which he builds a sonic landscape from the Saint-Nicolas church to the 'prequ'île'. The project is to constitute, based on an Android application, a sonic memory of a place based on recordings effectuated on-site. Short sound pieces (recordings, interviews, fictions) are re-injected in public space and become the traces that reactivate memories of our sensitive experience of a place. Géosonic Mix interrogates our rapport with a territory and experiments a new way to 'write' a space. Along the drift, audio fantoms mingle, throw themselves through the sonic environment making us lose our way and gets our senses ready to pounce in this encounter between reactivated sounds that are contained in the machine and the sounds coming from the walker environment, possible to infinitely explore.

MACHINE VARIATION

Machine_Variation is the most recent project common among the composers, performers and digital artists from Quebec Nicolas Bernier and Martin Messier. The key to this work is the place of the human body as an aspect of digital creation : on stage, the bodies of the two performers operate and control the creative process in forging direct connections with what we see and hear. The central element of the performance is an imposing physical structure, constructed with the artist Jonathan Villeneuve. The ensemble functions like an immense musical instrument of hypnotic variations that are impressive, subtle digital and concrete.

Croix is an audiovisual performance of Franck Vigroux and Antoine Schmitt. Franck Vigroux's music is “live electronics” powerful and abrasive, both rhythmic and atmospheric, that oscillates between industrial sound and noise. The generative video, Croix, is conceived by the artist Antoine Schmitt who is not present on stage. The images are fabricated from the figure of the cross of Kasimir Malevitch, symbol of artistic conscience. The figure itself is constituted of thousands of pixels that explode in the space according to the level of energy of the sound. In silence, they reform the cross. The generative system is connected to the live music during the performance. It gives a literal lecture of the dynamics of the music all while being the fixed point around which it evolves.

SYNAPSE (work in progress)

It begins with the souvenir of an installation : The lightning Field by Walter de Maria, prominent figure of land art. In the desert of New Mexico, 400 poles play lightning rods and shake the landscape in a deep way though the random bolts during a storm. It was an instantaneous obession for the choreographer and interpreter from Rennes Thierry Micouin, seen at Catherine Diverrès, Boris Charmatz and Olivier Dubois to name a few. An intuitive spark drove him towards the exploration and understanding of electric arcs, the physical transcription of lightning bolts. Beginning with an installation conceived by Pauline Boyer, he wishes to make correspond through gesture movement and displacement, different definitions, schemes and diagrams that characterize natural phenomenon of electroacoustic discharge. Synapse is envisioned as a possible choreographic re-transcription retaining the physical qualities of those discharges such as : tension, attraction, fusion, explosion etc. It is a meeting with strength... electric!

Beginning with his collection of cd's of sounds and noise, Nicolas Talbot proposes to create a sonic space for a garden situated in the city center of Caen. The narration of Pièce pour Disques de Bruit is developed from noise and little sounds originally used for background noise. These sounds are organized and classified by theme : water and cataclysm, horses, parish bells, the animal yard, rain, wind, tempest, storm, trains, sea and boats... The 45, 33, and 78 towers, dating from the 30's will be audible on electrophone, gramophone, and turntables disposed at different places in the garden.

Defined as “media sabotage” by the label Consumer Waste, Yann Leguay looks to fold reality on itself in using silmple methods in the forms of objects, editions, installation and performances that he delivers through different types of venues and international festivals. The overturning of the admitted norms and standards of music brings him to reclaim sound production tools in a raw way and without compromise. In Quad Core, the hard drives are open and turned away from their habitual use, to constitute an instrument that is entirely controllable but with unpredictable behavior. Widely known since 20 years for his media art, the multi-disciplinary artist Herma Kolgen lives and works in Montreal. A true audio-cinematic sculptor, he casts his primary subject matter from the intimate relationship between sound and image. Kolgen works to create objects that take the form of installations, of video and film works, of performances and sonic sculptures. In constant exploration, he works at the crossroads of different media, thus elaborating a new technical language and an aesthetic singularity. The impact of territory on humans I at the very center of his preoccupations.

The resulting tensions that result just as much as the interaction of the elements with each other constitutes the epicenter of his investigations. His shapeshifting work is, among other things characterized by a radio-graphic approach. It is the x-ray effect, in its immaterial quality, that permits us to see the invisible. Combined, associated with digital and with electronic across a highly sensitive work, his approach is thus turned towards hybrid forms. His practice of installation integrates an important work of spatialization, notably at the sound level. The conception and the use of random systems of auto-generation of sound and image thus permit to create sonic spaces particular by their immersive quality.

SEISMIK & AFTERSCHOCK

With Seismik, Herman Kolgen, probes once more the notion of tension related to his previous sound-stage creations, such as Train Fragments, The Dust or Inject ( these last two having been played for the 2012 edition of the festival) and revisits the influence of the territory on the human being, as much on the physical plane as the emotional. He invites us to tune into our senses, where sedimentary frictions, magnetic waves, the grumbling of matter, abstractions and patterns that collide upon visual and sonic dislocation. But the exploration continues. Internet relay, terrestrial and seismic readings, real time connections at diverse points and cities in the world. Their influence enriches in a random way the unveiling of this new audiovisual performance. --- The proliferation of nuclear waste is truly terrible. The human production of this waste is incredibly toxic and all this for hundreds of thousands of years. We must imagine the impact that our actions will carry on into a non-human future. Aftershock is a performance inspired by the consequences of several massive topological shocks. Exploring the ambiguous realism of post-human landscapes, Herman Kolgen creates virtual simulations and converts them at a large scale, into cinematographic images, thus confronting us with the nuclear aesthetic of the sublime and divine radioactivity. During the performance, sedimentation accentuates the maps of catastrophe. Kolgen equally develops a digital and manual process that confides in his work a post-seismic aesthetic. On stage, he performs solo or with invited musicians following a graphic score.

The festival proposes public meetings during which a guest artist introduces his artistic approach. Each piece showed at Interstice is part of a path. We can appreciate it in a certain space and a certain time, in relation with all the chosen works. Thanks to the privilege of a face to face, it's the whole artistic work we can follow and understand from its evolution, from the different layers of its composition, from the recurrent and always renewed themes, the motivations, the struggles... It's one of a rare opportunity to enter a very personal universe, beyond the particular context of any festival.

On the other hand, we take advantage of this tenth edition to open a new model for our face-to-face meetings that we will improve and enlarge in 2016 and 2017. It's all about asking a question, unveil a problematic linked to the festival news, to our artistic choices and a cultural social economical political technical context....

With our partnership with Le Pavillon, two exhibitions are proposed by two canadian artists, Martin Messier and Herman Kolgen, and one conference by Nicolas Maigret about the disnovation, neologism aiming a political analysis and a criticism of the very invasive concept of “innovation” in artistic, scientific and industrial fields.

Martin Messier is a composer, a performer and a video artist. If the sound is the motor of all his creations, Messier opens himself up easily to the meeting of electroacoustic music and meetings with other art forms, thus only with artistic collaborations. His works animate themselves through the relationship between sound and matter (objects or living bodies). The artist redefines to no end the frontiers of concrete music in creating sound with objects : alarm clocks, pencils, invented machines and sewing machines... At the beginning of this dialogue between sound and object, there is always this idea to push a bit further than usual the everyday imagination and magnify these objects in giving them a voice and a new use. Messier also conceives collaborative works that marries dance and music, aiming to allow sound to live on not only through objects, but also through bodies in movement. In an inverse hierarchy, the music, rather than being in the service of a choreography, becomes the motor. The works of Martin Messier were seen in several national festivals and events (Mutek, FTA and Mois Multi) and international (Transmediale in Berlin, Sonar in Barcelona, Nemo in Paris, Scopitone in Nantes and Today's Art in La Haye). La Chambre des Machines notably received recognition at the prestigious Prix Ars Electronica (Austria) in 2011. In 2010, Messier founded 14 sites, a production company for sound works for stage, a true platform for this new type of sonic creation.

DISNOVATION

Nicolas Maigret is an artist highly active in sound and media art since 2001. His work allows the perception of internal characteristics of media through their errors, dis-functioning, limit states or their thresholds of rupture. After having studied intermedia arts, he worked with the laboratory Locus-Sonus in Nice where he explored the domaine of sound creation and the net. He taught at the École des beaux-arts in Bordeaux and cofounded the collective Art of Failure in 2006? His works were presented in festival, galleries and museums around the world.

In just a couple of decades, the industrialized societies have known a never before seen technological boost. The coming of information technology and of communication, nourishing our collective living spaces, has profoundly transformed our relationship with the world. This global phenomenon contributed to the beginning of the techno-sciences, at the heart of our belief systems, and the binome of consumerism / innovation at the center of our economic systems.

The lexic of the innovation is today the rhetorical instrument, deploying itself from techno-scientific domains towards political areas, towards management, education or art. We thus propose the hypothesis of a possible “innovation propaganda”, an ideology asking that we resolve every need, problem, desire, by the creation of an artifact or supplementary concept and tends ultimately towards rendering obsolete all that preceded. If such propaganda is a work of art, it is no longer under a widespread or local form, but system-like and global, each individual being potentially the target and the transmitter. This simple hypothesis raises numerous questions :

- The permanent escape towards the new and the negation of the preceding values, does this behavior reflect a human necessity, an intuitive tendency, a saving virtue?

- Is innovation the expression of an ideal of those finalities dictated by strict economic and industrial choices?

- How do certain artists find themselves implicit actors in a mechanism that propagates and vulgarizes innovations?

- How does this context give birth to an ensemble of practices, criticisms, subversive activity, poetry or alternatives?

Widely known since 20 years for his media art, the multi-disciplinary artist Herma Kolgen lives and works in Montreal. A true audio-cinematic sculptor, he casts his primary subject matter from the intimate relationship between sound and image. Kolgen works to create objects that take the form of installations, of video and film works, of performances and sonic sculptures. In constant exploration, he works at the crossroads of different media, thus elaborating a new technical language and an aesthetic singularity. The impact of territory on humans I at the very center of his preoccupations.

The resulting tensions that result just as much as the interaction of the elements with each other constitutes the epicenter of his investigations. His shapeshifting work is, among other things characterized by a radio-graphic approach. It is the x-ray effect, in its immaterial quality, that permits us to see the invisible. Combined, associated with digital and with electronic across a highly sensitive work, his approach is thus turned towards hybrid forms. His practice of installation integrates an important work of spatialization, notably at the sound level. The conception and the use of random systems of auto-generation of sound and image thus permit to create sonic spaces particular by their immersive quality.

Relais d’sciences is the center for scientific and technical culture of Basse-Normandie. By the very nature of the presented works, the research and experimentation that they translate, and their mode of presentation, the festival ]Interstice[ is emblematic of the “ research and imagination “ that the MRI champions, in taking their place on the 'presqu'île' of Caen.

 

For this new edition, Relais d’sciences participates with the cultural mediation of the festival with its tools and its expertise “ Living Lab ”.

 

This lab is a method that roots itself on principals of co-creation and experimentation at a real scale, stimulated by societal challenges, economical, sanitary, cultural or environmental challenges as well. It is an approach, where citizens, inhabitants, public... are considered as key actors in a process of research and innovation. This engagement stimulates collaborations between heterogenous actors : researchers, enterprises, public institutions artists and others in the interest of developing un precedented discoveries. Finally it is an approach that permits a population to influence the evolutions of our society and to apprehend the social, cultural and economic risks.

Its most simple incarnation is the studio for co-creation and public contribution. Keeping in mind the sound parcours of Julien Poidevin, several workshops are proposed to the public to express themselves, to create to imagine new uses inspired by these works and traces of our explorations. Several sessions, free and independent will be proposed to the public :
